Fruit growers group meets on Monday
The next meeting of the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers will be held Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Office in Kainaliu.
Members will view a Powerpoint presentation on edible fruit and plants from the western Himalayas. The group’s elections will also take place, followed by a discussion on meetings to be held in 2007.
Members are asked to bring fruit for sampling.

SBA specialist coming to Kailua-Kona
The U.S. Small Business Administration has arranged a new program for small business owners in West Hawaii with the support of Central Pacific Bank. SBA business development specialist Mary Dale will offer confidential consultations on the numerous programs and services that the federal agency provides for small business owners at the Kailua-Kona branch at 75-1010 Henry St. on Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The free 30-minute consultations will address the specific needs and interests of each small business including the latest resources found to fund loans for working capital or longterm fixed assets, opportunities for development of business management skills, technical assistance and business development through government contracting programs and certifications.
The program also is open to nonbank customers. Sessions are confidential, free and with no obligations to businesses. Appointments are recommended; walk-ins will be assisted as time allows.

Waimea academy offers driver education course
Marlin Driving Academy is offering a driver education course in Waikoloa starting Feb. 26. The course runs from Feb. 26 through March 30 at Waikoloa Elementary School. Classes are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and Friday for five weeks, from 4 to 6 p.m.
A mandatory parent meeting is slated for Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Waikoloa Elementary School library conference room. Parents must attend the parent meeting prior to the start of the course, in order to complete registration forms and review course requirements.
The course is open to students ages 151/2 and older. The course includes 30 hours of classroom instruction plus six hours of behind-the-wheel driving time to be scheduled in April through June, after the completion of classroom instruction. The course covers rules of the road, driving safety and how to handle real-life driving situations. Students must have a valid state learner’s permit in order to drive.
